Similar to Bejeweled, Candy Crush, and numerous other puzzle games before it, it has consumed hours, days, weeks of our time. It's more than just sliding numbered blocks into simple sums. Every 2048 game online session can be described as a tense struggle for space, a Zen meditation when clicking solo and a full-on battle in the event of a war . 2048, playing with othersWhat's the reason we can't stop? Judy Willis, a neurologist and adjunct faculty member at the Graduate School of Education at University of California, Santa Barbara She explains the neurology of the 2048 addiction we are currently experiencing. It's All About the Dopamine In terms of neurotransmitters, dopamine is one of the most famous. It transmits information through your nervous system every day. When it's accumulated the brain goes into hyperdrive. "Dopamine is the one of the most powerful neurochemicals - and the most addictive drug that we are aware of," Willis says. Dopamine boosts pleasure and perseverance while decreasing stress. Dopamine is a stimulant that can be stimulated through winning a bet, having a successful work experience, or even using cocaine. This dopamine-driven combination of pleasure and perseverance is what motivates athletes to work more, it's also what draws addicts to drugs. The same is true for 2048. "Games like 2048 offer gamers two of the largest dopamine boosters," Willis says, which are: 1. Willis: The power of predictions. Willis states that "The brain loves making predictions." "In 2048 every 2 or 4 predictions you make are an attempt to make a prediction. You don't know what's right to do but the game provides you endless opportunities to make another prediction. Willis cites James Paul Gee's studies that show predictors still generate dopamine in the form of a rush that has the rate of 80 percent failure. This means that even the scoreboard of 2048 is destroyed eight times out of 10 times, your brain will want you to continue playing. Dopamine's effects allow you to remain at peace even when you don't attain 2048 game. "Instead of being stressed out, the brain is so at ease that it doesn't want to stop," Willis says. 2. Achievable test: If a game is too easy, or too difficult, dopamine levels decrease. To get the maximum increase in dopamine levels, Willis says, a game must be challenging but capable of being beat. "'Achievable challenging' is one of the most important words," she says. This is the best way to get the most dopamine boost. Those of you who have reached 2048 (by luck) know that this coveted goal can be both difficult and feasible. This means we won't be able to work or sleep until we've won again. "It feels so good to be able to conquer a task that they keep on playing," Willis says. Your Daily (or Hourly) 2048 Fix The addiction to video games is a real thing, but there are vast differences between a diehard player and an addict. Willis states that those who are addicted to video games experience the feelings so intense that they can't perform other tasks within their lives. Fortunately, it hasn't gotten to that level in our particular case. Yet. The productivity of our office has dropped by 20 percent from 2048. Willis states that it's normal. She believes that the regular dopamine surge from the combination of 16s and 32 can lead to the desire not to work. "Because it's impossible to know if you'll improve next time."
